Goods transport strike called off

A group of workers and owners of goods transport has ended their 72-hour strike that began yesterday.

"We have withdrew our work abstention after a productive meeting at the Secretariat today," Talukder Mohammed Monir (top leader of the platform that enforced the strike) told The Daily Star.

Bangladesh Covered Van, Truck, Prime Mover Goods Transportation Owners Association, Bangladesh Truck Drivers Workers Federation called the 72-hour strike on August 28 to make their 15-point demand.

They want to see the "additional income tax" removed and heavy vehicle licences issued to heavy vehicle drivers directly. Currently, a driver must first get a light vehicle licence, then a licence for medium vehicles, before obtaining a heavy vehicle license. There are also changes to the Road Transport Act-2018.

Since yesterday morning, goods transport from major land and sea ports has been stopped by the strike.

Monir, the president of Bangladesh Truck Drivers Workers Federation said that the home minister had agreed to their 14 points, and requested time to discuss another -- about withholding additional income tax.
